Desert Stars: Using the Universe to Find Your Way Home

June 5: the talk by Iza Steiner was fascinating, and well attended with the room almost full. Hopefully she will repeat the program later this summer!
Castle Valley is now a certified Dark Sky Community!

In the 21st century we know that light pollution disrupts the natural cycle of light and
dark for wildlife, affects human health, wastes energy resources which contributes to

climate change, and blocks our view of the universe.

What was the role of the night sky in past civilizations?

Join Castle Valley archaeoastronomer Iza (Bambi) Steiner
for a talk about how ancient peoples used the stars and constellations
to find their way home, tell time, and create calendars.

Steiner will share her research in cultural astronomy
from ancient Sumerians to Babylonians, Egyptians and Greeks,
with emphasis on how ancient Greeks used, tracked, and remembered the stars.

Take off your sunglasses
and we will explore why the night sky was so sacred that the Greeks
called their religious festivals "all-nighters".

Followed by viewing the night sky (bring a red-light flashlight if you have one).
